How much will it cost me to travel to Japan and stay for a week?
Q. After graduation, I plan on traveling to Japan with a friend. I was wondering what the individual cost will be.

A. This depends a lot on how thrifty you are, on your choice of accommodation, and how much travel you are planning to do.
Youth hostels range in price from $35 to $85 per night.
Hotels, ryokan(Japanese inns) can be more expensive.
Travel by Shinkansen(bullet train) is very expensive unless you have the 7-day JR Railpass.
You have to purchase an exchange voucher for this pass at an authorized travel agency such as JTB, then exchange this pass in Japan at a Midori No Madoguchi ticket office in Japan. These are located at pretty much every trainstation and major airport. The cost for a 7-day Ordinary pass is 28,700 yen.(about $269 US $)
The pass is good for the NEX train from Narita to Tokyo, all JR subways in Tokyo, all JR buses(except the one from Shin-Osaka to Tokushima because it uses toll bridges), all Shinkansen(except the Nozomi), all local JR trains, as well as the JR ferry to Miyajima.
I don't know what the airfare is from your city, but from Vancouver, Canada the fare was around $800 return.
In addition to that, you should plan on exchanging approx. $600 to Japanese yen. This will be plenty for meals and some souvenirs, and admission fees. Even if you run out of money, you can use your credit or debit card at a bankmachine at any postoffice or CitiBank branch.
Advice: Do NOT rent a cellphone in Japan. My cost for 2 weeks was around $425 CDN.(I needed a cellphone to contact all of my friends).
Here are some sites to help you plan your travel:
www.hyperdia.com train, bus and air plane travel
www.xe.com money exchange rates
www.japanrailpass.com info on Japan Railpass
www.hihostels.com

All in all, $1800 per person would be sufficient if you do not use high-end luxury hotels.
By the way, meals do not cost $50. Food is actually quite cheap, especially the local specialties. Meals range in price from around $8 to $25. Packaged meals sold in 7-11s and AM/PMs are much cheaper, but still of good quality.

What kind of good jobs or careers can you have that don't require sitting at a desk?

Q. I'm going to college later this year. I don't really want to end up in a career or job where I have to sit at a desk or be in an office all day. I want to do something interesting where I'll be on my feet and have my mind stimulated.

What is the longest continuously open business?
Q. By continuously open, I mean 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Many 24 hour grocery stores will close on a holiday, so those would not count.
I'm looking for the same for-profit business, operating in the same location, that never closes, regardless of how the ownership of that business changes over the years, or their product offerings - just as long as they never put up a "closed" sign.

A. Hotels

How long should we travel to Europe for?
Q. My family wants to travel to Europe next summer and we want to go to Italy, Austria, Germany, France, and Spain. How long do you think that we should go for to really get to see all of the famous sites and all of the other must-see places.

Thanks in advance!
basically, the cities that we want to go to are Rome, Milan, Venice, Verona, Innsbruck, (maybe Vienna), Munich, Frankfort, Berlin, Strasbourg, Paris, Nantes, Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid.

A. (city - minimum days, suggested days)

Rome - 2 , 5
Milan - 1, 0 (don't go to Milan, its not worth the time. nothing to see there, ugly industrial town - in my oppinion - maybe try Firenze instead, much more beautiful)
Venice - 1,1 (a must have, but it's soooo crowded with tourists)
Verona 1,1 (never been there, but rather small)
Innsbruck 1,0 (not worth to visit)
maybe Vienna 2,4 (great city, one of the best worldwide; not directly on your route, but definatly worth to visit)
Munich 2,4 (my hometown)
Frankfurt 1,2
Berlin 2,5
Strasbourg 1, don't know havent been there
Paris 3,6
Nantes (don't know at all)
Barcelona 3,5
Valencia (don't know at all)
Madrid 3,5

I would guess a minimum of 4 weeks for this programm (estimating you sleep during moving from one point to the other), but this is already so tight I doubt it could be fun. If I were you, I would rather cut some places and enjoy more. My route (based on your route) would be:

5 days in Rome
1 day travel, slowly, with time to go to smaller villages a little bit of the highways (it's worth it)
1 day to Venice
1 day travell, go see the alps, go on top of a mountain, enjoy pure nature
4 days Vienna
1 day travell, go see the Chiemsee incl. Castle Herrenchiemsee and monestry frauenchiemsee with a bouttour
3 days Munich
1 day travel (you'll need all day for the travalling, so no stop)
5 days Paris
2 days travel, stop in Nice and traval at the cost to...
5 days Barcelona

It's still about 29 days... Contact me for further advise.

What is the best way to expierence a trip to europe?

Q. What would better, a vacation package, or just renting a car and going with the flow?

A. OMG OMG I wanted to do the same for the USA!

and u want to come to Europe! Great!
Now listen!

You need to rent a car, buy a book or two about the areas you want to visit and go with the crazy flow and leave it all to randomnes, of course when you go to Barcelona you will have to see the best things there, and you can check your travell books for that!
REmeber Europe is just as big as the US and you need to take in consideration also that to go from one city to the otehr say barcelona to Madrid or from Madrid to Paris you ll need quite a lot of driving! A day or maybe two each. But its worth it. Only in this way you will be able to experience Europe, which also happens in the little cities rather then just in the major ones!

On the other hand when you go with a group of people you make new friends and share the experience.

So the decision is your.

If you are already with friends, and do not appreciate meeting even more new ones, then go by car!

Whatever you do make sure you plan in advance, even for your car trips because its often that people do waste time with loosing themselfes in a new city, which is fun in its own way but that you can do when you have time, after you have seen the essentials of that city!

so good luck!

My dream of going to the US this summer did not happen, but I am glad that you are going to make ti! so go for it! and have it for the rest of your life, its an amaqsing experience! it will be with you forever! if you got friends to share it with, even more so!

What causes sound wave to travel faster under water than above the water or in the air?
Q. Please detailed and sensible answers will be greatly appreciated.

A. sound travells faster in less dense medium, and air has a density of 1.3g/cm3 while water has a density of 1.0g/cm3,therefore sound travells faster under water because being less dense increases the distance travelled by the sound.

How long does it take for Horror Affairs to give one a passport?

Q. B is doing a shoot in Botswana pretty soon. He'd like me to join him and also just get a feel for Botswana and see if we could live there, make more bucks before heading else where, if we can afford to. He's been thinking of moving from South Africa for ages and since we're Tswana speaking and born, it wouldnt be such a mission blending in.

So how long does it take for a passport? Does anyone know how much one will also be paying?

Thanks...:)

A. About 2 months.
Do it in the Jhb CBD.
The passport cues are shorter there trust me.
Its because black people do not travell outside the country.
Their ID cue is very long but the passport is very very short.
If you go to Randburg and any lany place the cue is long because whites travel abroad often.

You will need your ID, and 2 photo's.

Read the instructions here of what you need here:

Download the application and fill it in here:

How would i decorate my room to make it look like a boudoir?

Q. I would like it to look very parisian but i have no idea how to go about it! Does anyone have any tips on how to decorate it? What colour should i paint the walls and what furniture would be good? If any one has any pictures that i could use for inspiration it would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance! xx
edit- My bedroom is quite large and airy. Would dark colours be alright to use?

A. Lots of people think painting a room in darker colors would make it look more luxurious. I disagree, because more often than not dark colors come off looking a bit devoid of colors. Think of it this way: if you ever check into a luxury hotel room, you probably don't want it painted in dark purple! If you want your room to have a somewhat mysterious dark tone, invest in a good ceiling light with an adjustable power switch that project warm color lighting. Since you mentioned your room is quite large, you may also want to get a few floor lamps and table lamps to help you get better control of lighting in the room.

Unless your room is already in the right color, I would definitely repaint it. You should go for a rich golden brown color to match the theme of a Boudoir/Parisian room. Since it is the same color scheme as sun rays, and warm color lights, it is easy to control the look and feel of a room by playing with different light source.

As for the furniture, a Canopy Bed is a must for a Boudoir. I would even go through the extra effort to pick out good curtains to go on the frame. You'll also need a dresser, table and mirror, and nightstand that match the bed. Shop around for a good bedroom set that features a canopy bed. You can really tell the difference. In this case, a dark color for these furniture would help accentuate your decor.

To finish off, shop around for a couple of good paintings, curtains, and a rug. make sure you get good curtains that not only look good, but also blocks off sunlight. Do two layers, with a set of thinner curtains that only partially shields you from the sun, for when the sun gets too bright, and a heavy curtain when you want the sun out completely. Also the rug should go just half way under the bed so half of it is exposed, and half submerged under the bed. This just helps establish the bed as the center piece of your room.

Finally, don't be afraid to accessorize your bed. Get a few luxury bed and pillow sheets, and a few extra pillows or cushions. The bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom, particularly Boudoir. You may need to take some time to shop around, but it really is worth the effort.

Hope this helps!

How am I able to go to Africa and volunteer to build a school there in the future?
Q. Well Im only 13 going on 14. And one of my life goals is to go Africa and help build a school with other volunteers. I know I cant do it now since Im a minor. But maybe during high school or college. Would I have to pay for joining the organizations? Would I have to pay for a plane flight and meet everyone a certain place? How long would I be there and where would we live in for that certain amount of time? Do I need to speak the languages there?

A. I do volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing (that's how I got my nickname!), so I can share how it's worked for me with them.
You don't pay to join these two organizations.
You do pay for your own airfare and meet the rest of the group in a certain place. You also pay a fee which covers your expenses while on the ground (housing, food, transportation) as well as a donation to the local organization to help with their work.
The trips generally last one to three weeks; most volunteers can't give more time than that at once.
As for housing, most of the trips I've been on have put us in shared rooms in a non-luxury hotel; for my most recent trip, the organization rented the upper half of a duplex for the summer to house the teams of volunteers that were coming in. However, I've read of trips where the teams stayed in gymnasiums or tents..... On some trips, provisions have been made for prepared meals to be provided, while on others, the team cooks for itself.
Speaking the language is helpful but generally not required. I've found that I get more out of the experience if I'm able to speak with the people I'm helping. On my trips, there has always been at least one person who spoke both languages - but if that person is busy doing something else, you don't have an interpreter at that moment!

Habitat for Humanity has very limited opportunities for people under 18, due to liability concerns. Minors can't operate power tools. There are supervision requirements; a group volunteering must have one adult per specified number of minors. We've had high school groups come in and do landscaping, install closet shelves, things like that. Habitat has an active college program; in fact, two of the colleges in our area have their own campus chapters and one of them has done amazing things in the fundraising area as well as actual construction labor.

I applaud your goal and hope you have the opportunity to achieve it.

How much would a trip to Japan cost me if I can plan it with in about a year?
Q. I would like to stay for 2 weeks with my boyfriend. How much do we need to start saving to make it a great trip for about 2 weeks?

A. Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US

Hotel: Usually, you need $100 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $30-50 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $200-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $50-100 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $100 for hotel and $75 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2450 and airfare for each.

What is the difference between 4 star and 5 star resorts?

Q. Im a 21 yr old male travelling to varadero Cuba in june. is there a significant difference between a four star resort and a five start resort? Im trying to save cash so would i be missing out if i go with a 4 star resort?

A. This is straight from the Orbitz website:

Here's an idea about what to expect with each star rating:

* 5 Stars - Luxury hotels: Treat yourself well with first-class services and accommodations. The hotel decor usually creates an elegant ambiance from the lobby to each individual guest room or suite. Hotel restaurants are often renown for their famous chefs and delectable dishes and are usually located in the most desirable locations in major cities and resort areas. Other amenities include: valet parking, concierge service, room service, well-equipped fitness centers and state-of-the-art business centers.

* 4 Stars - Deluxe/upscale hotels: Find comfort, class and quality that you can count on. These hotels will usually be in a prime location and other amenities may include: proximity to desirable shopping areas and restaurants, valet parking, concierge service, room service, well-equipped fitness centers and state-of-the-art business centers. These properties may be newly constructed or recently renovated, and offer tasteful decor in each room or suite.

* 3 Stars - Mid-scale hotels: Discover convenience and comfort in the city or in the suburbs where many of these properties are located. Amenities that may be available include: swimming pools, fitness centers, room service, concierge service and parking. Often you'll find these properties located near highways and office complexes. Rooms and lobbies are nicely furnished, and restaurants are usually located at the property.

* 2 Stars - Value Properties: Get back to basics with these comfortable properties that offer affordable prices. These properties are often located near office parks, airports, and shopping and retail areas. Rooms are comfortably decorated but not overly elegant. Usually, these properties do not have restaurants or room service, but offer free parking and sometimes, swimming pools. Transportation is occasionally offered to nearby airports.

* 1 Star - Economy Hotels & Motels: Stay in simple accommodations that typically are located near major highways and transportation. Amenities include free parking, local calls and cable television. Restaurants are often located nearby, and room service is usually not available. Some economy hotels and motels have swimming pools located on the property.

How do I get big discounts for hotels in Los Angeles area?
Q. We are planning a trip to Los Angeles. We want to stay at Santa Monica, but the hotel prices are way too pricey. We may stay in Los Angeles, not sure yet. Depends on hotels. I hear all of the time that there are ways to get big discounts, but I don't know how to do that.

A. Triple A is usually the common discount if you're a member.

As far as big discounts, if you're a big traveler you might want to look into becoming a Leisure Travel Consultant. You get great LTC rates on hotels, resorts, cruises, rental cars, etc. As well as make commissions from any sales you make.

If you don't like the idea of being an LTC, you could check out becoming a Dreamtrips member. Hands down they offer the best deals on luxury hotels, resorts, and trips i've ever seen. They're pretty unbelievable. I was sold as soon as I looked at what they had to offer and they keep adding more. With Dreamtrips the deals are for you and a guest/spouse and often includes the kids too. Definitely worth looking into.

Hope this helped.

How do you feel about Larry Ellison buying the Hawaiian island of Lanai?
Q. Ellison is the CEO of Oracle and one of the richest men in the world. He recently purchased Hawaii's sixth-largest island, Lanai, for his own private use. It apparently cost him half a billion dollars but he can obviously afford it. Are you good with this sort of thing or does it bother you? Please explain your reasoning.

A. I think it's great! He's a Job Creator, which should be the most revered & protected people in America.

You are not to question the intentions or actions of a Job Creator - doing so is un-American & Socialist.

In fact, I hope Larry Ellison buys the big island of Hawaii, kicks the Natives out, and turns into golf courses, luxury hotels, mining facilities, and training grounds for private military contractors that will protect our Freedom.

What are some unique location ideas for a wedding reception?

Q. Early planning stages for a wedding and want to do something fun for the reception. We're thinking about a picnic or backyard, but we've also considered the children's museum or a bowling alley. Any suggestions?

A. Picnic receptions are fun because there is such a large choice of beautiful inexpensive decorating ideas. Also, you can get really creative with the food choices, and it is more informal. You can decorate with beautiful plants and flowers in planters that you can actually use in/around your home after the wedding instead of wasting all that money on picked flowers.

What would you recommend to serve at a baby shower?
Q. I'm throwing a baby shower for my best friend in late March, I'm throwing it in a park and there will be no more than 30 people there. What do you think?

A. A picnic is a great idea!! Depending on the crowd you are pleasing you could go different directions, if it's going to be a fluffy, really girly kind of baby shower then some great little sandwiches de-crusted with cream cheese and cucumber, or prosciutto with arugula and brie, would be great. Also you could have a little dessert bar at the end where you bring picnic friendly desserts. Her cake, for example, could maybe be a cupcake cake so you don't have to worry about sharp knives and everything, it's also easy to assemble while you are at the park and you can make it as small or as large as you want, it's even easy to take home because it can be divided up if someone want to take some home with them. For the rest of the dessert bar you can get one of those little chocolate dessert fountains, they have some I think that are battery powered now and they are only like 30 bucks but totally worth it. Then you can set out marshmallows and dried fruits, strawberries, cookies and any other snacks to dip in. As for side dishes, a nice cole slaw with a vinaigrette instead of the traditional mayo is always nice and keeps better for a picnic. Also a nice pesto pasta salad is always a hit. I make mine with a bunch of basil olive oil parmesan cheese and toasted pine nuts and garlic whip it all together in a blender and pour the olive oil in until you reach your desired consistency then boil some pasta noodles anything you have, chop some dry salami, not the kind that's already pre-sliced, add some chunks of cheddar cheese and some salt and pepper toss to coat and viola, be sure to keep it cold though (one of my moms inventions). The veggie and the fruit tray is a great idea and I always make this dip that is absolutely to die for with my fruit platters, it's 1 package regular Philadelphia cream cheese (the little block package) and one jar of Jet puffed Marshmallow whip, be sure to have the cream cheese at room temperature when you mix it but pop it in the fridge after you make it to get it cold for the picnic (Helpful Hint: If you know the sex of the baby you can dye the dip as well as the frosting for the cake accordingly, if not just leave it white) . As for drinks since the Mommy to be can't drink I would recommend making a spritzer sort of thing with some of her favorite juices and some ginger age or sprite, if you want to go a little lighter on sugar you can use sparkling water instead of soda, also you can use frozen fruit to keep everyones drinks cold instead of ice cubes, they're edible healthy and stay cold almost as long ( this is what I do and find it to be much better). Good Luck, hope this helped!!! Happy Feasting!!

Q. In some videos and pictures of atomic bomb explosions there are these smokes trails ether vertically or horizontally that appear right after the flash. I was just curious asas to they are? Its probably a simple explanation, it just looks odd to me.

What can I replace a shed with underneath a willow tree?

Q. I want to get rid of a 6" x 4" shed that is currently stood on a concrete base, partly underneath a willow tree in my garden. Anyone know what i can put in its place? Maybe stand alone plants or furniture or something? I don't want to get rid of the concrete base.

A. A nice picnic table and maybe some outdoor lounge chairs.
making it a nice family gathering place on nice days.

What is the proper attire for family day; the day before basic training graduation?
Q. My son graduates from bct next month. I have found the answer for proper attire at the graduation itself, but what about family day? The day before graduation, I believe spent on base with your soldier.

A. Think church picnic.

Yes, I would also consider the weather and comfort, but also keep inmind that this is professional. If the OTHER PEOPLE at the picnic would feel comfortable with you wearing that outfit to a church picnic - and it suits the weather - you'll be fine.

And you can just watch the people that show up in tiny micro-dresses and short-shorts, and the dirty looks they get... and the other people in long sleeves and jeans that are dying from the heat... and laugh.

What's a quick, easy, romantic dinner I can make for my boyfriend tonight?
Q. If anyone has any suggestions for something healthy, that would be ideal. I am planning a nice night for our 1 year. I usually make something like chicken and pasta, but I'm looking for something different.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

A. Have a carpet picnic, spread a blanket on the floor, have some fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, stuff you would have at a picnic and lots of candles....

How much does it cost to travel from Heathrow to Victoria?

Q. On the 7th of April I need to get from Heathrow terminal 5 to Victoria station, I'll be traveling early in the morning so it'll be peak time. How much will it cost me to take this route?

A. A one off single cash fare from Terminal 5 to Victoria station on the underground will cost you £4 - regardless of what time you travell.

There are cheaper options if you are going to do any more travelling while in London - such as an 'Oyster' card - but if your only making the one journey its possibly best just to pay cash.

You say you'll be travelling early but don't say how early - the first underground train leaves a 6 am - then there are frequent trains from then on. Do not worry about peak travel - as the underground starts at T5 it will be virtually empty when you board - though will fill up as you enter London.

Transport for London (tfl) recommend you take the tube from T5 (only one line) and travel to South Kensington where you can change to the District or Circle lines to Victoria - the journey will take approximately one hour.

If you have a lot of luggage I would say change trains at Barons Court - you only have the choice of the District line there but the interchange is just across a flat platform with no stairs or escalators.

For all details and maps of travelling in London go to :-

My fiance and I are considering eloping to Yosemite. Any recommendations on what company we should work with?

Q. We want a very small ceremony, either just us or some close family and friends. We have begun researching websites for Yosemite elopements, but can't tell if they are legitimate or have good reviews. If you have any advice or experience to share, we would greatly appreciate it!

A. My husband and I were married in Yosemite Valley at the little church in the valley. It is a small old church with the steeple on the right of the main road going through Yosemite meadows. I don't know if you could fit more than 20 people there but it's very quaint and price is very reasonable. We contacted the church pastor and had our flowers done in Mariposa the day before the wedding. We found a local photographer and he actually ended up being our best man LOL. We stayed at a local Bed and Breakfast but it's no longer there now. However The Ahawhnee Hotel is an awesome place to stay and you can have a wedding and reception there if you have the money to do so. You'll need to make reservations at http://www.yosemitepark.com/Accommodations_TheAhwahnee.aspx I'd also strongly suggest you take a look at a Bed and Breakfast over on the back side of Yosemite in a small town called Oakhurst. It's called Chateau du Sureau and is part of the Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel and gourmet restaurant chain... the place is amazing, they do a lot of weddings and house the wedding party...yes it's pricy but hey you only have one big wedding day right;-) Here's their website http://www.chateaudusureau.com My hubby and I have stayed there several times and it's like a fairy tale. Each room is different, the staff line up and meet you out front like you actually live there, you'll feel like a princess. They have a private villa as well as the main house, 5 star all the way. The breakfast is amazing. They have the neatest chess board out back that is life size, lots of fun. Erna the owner also owns the restaurant next door and the food is amazing. So those are the 2 places I highly recommend, though there are other places in Mariposa, Oakhurst that are very close to Yosemite. Here is a good website with several you can compare, sometimes they do weddings too. http://www.yosemitebnbs.com/comparebnbs/index.html http://www.houndstoothinn.com Congrats, have a wonderful marriage. We're going on 26 years and lovin every minute together.

What are the smoke lines in atom bomb pictures and videos?
Q. In some videos and pictures of atomic bomb explosions there are these smokes trails ether vertically or horizontally that appear right after the flash. I was just curious asas to they are? Its probably a simple explanation, it just looks odd to me.

A. They are not smoke trails, usually. When the bomb (any bomb) explodes, the first things out are a shock wave. This travells very fast, and the pictures look like they are smoke trails, but they are just distortions in the air.
